I am a big CAD geek. I’m the kind of guy who actually reads those manuals. I enjoy reading the books, websites and Blogs and I’ve even travelled all the way to Las Vegas to attend Autodesk University. I’m proud to say that when my colleagues get stuck, they come to me for answers.

I have decided to create a Blog as a useful tool for all those people like me who use CAD for setting out Joinery. I will post or provide links to the tips, tricks and tutorials that have helped me along the way.

Term Ends:  14 June 2013

Phil Barnes

Role Vice Chairman

I am 51 years old and a qualified architect with over 25 years experience working for various private practices and a multi disciplinary Project Management company, where I set up and ran their design studio. I used to run my own consultancy specialising in CAD and systems management, implementing and maintaining systems and standards before being offered a permanent position as Systems Administrator, where we run AutoCAD Architecture2011, 3ds Max Design2011 amongst other packages.
I am passionate about technology and enjoy enabling colleagues to work through encouragement and mentoring. I have been a member of AUGIUK for 5 years and want to help drag the Chapter out of the doldrums it seems to in currently.

Neil Jones

My name is Neil Jones and I work for I&H Brown, a civil engineering company specialising in earthworks, ground remediation and development, based in Perth, Scotland. I started my career in opencast coal mining in 1985 where I used the MOSS modelling system before moving to LSS for quantities/designs and AutoCAD LT for drawing production.
I researched available software and I quickly realised the potential that Civil 3D could have in my field so I persuaded the company to invest in the software and now it is the prime tool for progressing my work – I currently run 64bit Civil 3D 2012 under Windows 7x64.
My primary usage of Civil 3D is for wind farm work from progressing the company’s own developments to tender estimation and design of horizontal and vertical access track alignments and crane hardstandings, mass haul earthworks analysis, simple 3D visuals and catchment analysis. The dynamic modelling is a major timesaver as is the ability to easily produce drawings in an integrated package.
Additionally, I give in house training to AutoCAD LT users and have written instruction/procedures notes for various task specific uses.
I have been a member of AUGI for some time and I am also an active member of the Civil 3DUKIE and Autodesk Civil 3D forums. I post and respond on a regular basis (as well as being a forum moderator for Civil 3DUKIE) offering assistance to users who have queries about software usage.
The forums have been a very useful resource when I have run into a problem with the software and generally within a few hours someone has responded and solved my problem.
I think I can bring another perspective to AUGI in terms of use of Civil 3D at the “sharp end” of the industry.
